The shock absorber spring aids and interacts with a shock absorber as part of a vehicle suspension system supporting its weight and absorbing damage done to it. The shock absorber spring acts as a said damper as it expands and compresses due to the motions of a vehicle and the effects it endures.
In case the vehicle strikes a bump, the wheel's motion upwards causes the spring to compress and enables it to store impact energy. After the upward motion is completed and the wheel moves down, the spring transfers energy to the wheel assisting it back to the starting position; this entire process is known as the shock's absorption. The spring's oscillations are damped by the shock so the vehicle does not explosively bounce off the ground like a pogo stick. The spring rate, spring dampening factors and the weight of the vehicle all together determine the level of stiffness the shock absorbing spring has. Stiffer shock springs improve comfort when riding but do compromise the ease by which the vehicle can be handled and the load - supporting capabilities.
