Camshaft timing refers to the precise alignment of the camshaft’s rotation with the crankshaft in an engine. The alignment of camshaft rotation with crankshaft determines valve timing which controls when the intake and exhaust valves open relative to the position of the piston in the cylinder. To achieve optimal engine efficiency, it is critical to achieve optimal camshaft timing. Lower combustion efficiency coupled with lack of power and greater emissions signify problems due to improperly set camshaft timing. Whereas timing is normally set during assembly, it is possible to adjust timing to improve performance in certain engines. To ensure proper camshaft timing, components such as a timing belt, chain, or gear must be used. For uninterrupted camshaft timing, these components need to be in good condition through the life of the engine to ensure correct tension throughout the engine.
